Taking the leap

"Delirium: Um. What’s the name of the word for things not being the same always. You know. I’m sure there is one. Isn’t there? There must be a word for it… the thing that lets you know time is happening. Is there a word?
Dream: Change."

Neil Gaiman, The Sandman, Vol. 7: Brief Lives

Change is scary. It is human nature to avoid it, favoring the safety of our comfort zone instead. And yet, last month, for the second or third time in my life, I found myself at this place where the uncertainty of change was less scary than the staleness of the status quo.

So I took a deep breath, counted to 3, and took the leap. I quit my job and signed up for the software engineering bootcamp at Flatiron school.

Changing your life circumstances is a lot like diving into water on a cold winter day. The initial thermal shock may be painful, but if you just keep paddling and breathing, your body will naturally adjust to it.

It was uncomfortable leaving a job that I knew so well I could basically do it in my sleep to dive head-first in a new field—and in my mid-thirties, nonetheless. But I'm adaptive, and I know I'll soon be swimming laps around this engineering pool.

I hope to keep documenting my journey here. Thank you for reading!
